Minecraft: The Great Hole Dig Of 2011

I am an addict. Phew! There, I said it. I, like many other closet geeks, am addicted to Minecraft. Damn you notch!! I first heard about Minecraft on good game where bajo told me of the joys of punching sheep, I was a little confused as to what this new game, that looked like an old game, was actually all about. Husband heard about it too, and next thing you know, we purchased it for something like 9 gbp or whatever.

Didn't exactly break the bank so what the hey!

Minecraft is the hardest game to explain, because it doesn't really have a point. You just do what you want to do with it.

Some people play it as a hunting game, waiting for the night to fall an the monsters to come out.

Others build massive structures, quite impressive really, one guy built the starship enterprise for crying out loud!

And me? Well, I dug a hole.

At first I was all like "yay, breaking bricks and building homes, digging for iron, woot!" Then I was like "cool, I found a massive cavern while digging a tunnel and it had zombies in it that killed me!" But also I was like "'now that i've re-spawned and killed all the zombies and shit and put up some torches and stuff, there's heaps of cool shizzit in here!" And then I was all "i'm so lost in this labyrinth of caverns! I wish it was one big cavern!"

So that was how I began the great hole dig of 2011!

I downloaded (by i, I mean husband, he's clever like that) a map program so I can actually see what i'm digging into, and I began to look down through the layers of my world.

I discovered that all my caverns, were actually connected, and that in all the walls and floors separating the 'rooms', was a whole heap of cool shit!

So using the map, I marked out the corners of what would be the great hole, making sure to not miss any ore deposits below the surface.

I then connected the corners with a walkway.

Filled in all the water, then dug out the dirt.

Encased the water spawn point in an orb of dirt.

Then began to systematically dig my way down.

And down.

And down!

The floor of the great hole covers 48 x 98 cubes.

That's 4,704 cubes. Assuming a layer consists of entirely gravel bricks, and that a pick-axe destroys approx 130 gravel bricks before breaking, that's approx 36 pick-axes per layer. I'm about 23 layers below sea level. To get there I would have needed to break approx 108,192 bricks. That's 832 pick-axes. I have spent a significant number of hours digging this hole.

And I'm only about half way......

But Minecraft isn't just about digging and building (or mining and crafting if you will), there's other thing in this game.

Such as soft and fluffy animals!

Punching a sheep gives you wool, now available in both the black and white varieties.

Killing a pig gives you a pork chop for health, you can then cook the pork chop for extra crispy health goodness.

Killing a chicken gives you feathers for arrows.

Killing cows gives you leather for armour, it's week, but everyone looks good in a leather suit.

You can also craft a saddle, allowing you to ride the pig..... I haven't done that yet.

But when the sun sets over the horizon, look out......

Because you are not alone......

Monsters will spawn in any dark place, which is why my great hole is covered in pretty torches. Skeletons shoot arrows, which makes them difficult to kill unless you've crafted yourself a bow and some arrows. Every time you try to get close enough to hit them with your sword, they just shoot you! But you can hear their bones ratting when they're close, giving you ample time to run away. Spiders are fairly easy to kill, and necessary for acquiring string to craft your bow. Plus they make a squelchy squeeling sound so you can hear them coming. Zombies moan of course, so they're easy enough to hear coming. Not hard to kill, just a few jabs with your sword and they're dead. Also, along with skeletons, zombies catch on fire when the sun comes up!

And then there's the creeper.

The creepers only aim in life, is to fuck your shit up.

You cannot hear the creeper coming.

He makes no footsteps.

You'll be working away at mining some iron, when you hear a sssssssss......Kaboom!

The sssssssss tells you you have approx 2 seconds before that damn creeper blows up, destroying all your hard work, and often killing you too.

The creeper is the most feared monster in Minecraft. The worst part is, when you die, you drop all your belongings. You then re-spawn, at your original spawn point from when you first played the game. All your belongings will be waiting for you for a limited amount of time, but they wait where you died. If you die at night, which is when most Minecraft deaths occur as a result of monster attacks, then you will re-spawn far away, with no belongings, no armour, no weapons, and have to find your way back without dying again! I don't know what it is about Minecraft, but I love it. I'm completely addicted and don't think that'll change anytime soon. It's one of those things where you try to explain it to people and they just look at you like you're eating your own earwax or something. You'll just have to try it out for yourselves.

Beware the creeper.

The Evolution of the Xbox Kinect

Microsoft's Kinect, the latest in a long of line of Xbox 360 accessories, has met with overwhelming success in the months since its release. With 8 millions units sold in the first two months, it trumped the iPad as the fastest-selling electronic gadget of all time. Despite this, it has met with something of a mixed reception from the critical community... not because of any flaw in the device itself, but because of its somewhat limited game library. The original Xbox saw huge success because of its "killer app" Halo. So what is Kinect's killer app? What's going to convince the average gamer that this device is more than just an expensive EyeToy?

The answer is coming from a surprising source: the homebrew geek community, who have hacked Kinect and put it to all sorts of creative and revolutionary uses. By hooking up the Kinect to desktop PCs, netbooks and a variety of other computing devices via USB, they've found new and exciting ways to use Microsoft's 3D camera. For example, one enterprising geek created a 3D version of Tetris, where you manipulate the pieces with your hands and the camera perspective with your head. Other video games that have been adapted for Kinect by geeks are Minecraft, Mario Kart, and even Super Mario Brothers.

But it's not just classic video games that are receiving the royal treatment. One guy used Kinect to create an actual working air guitar! Just imagine a future version of Rock Band without the cheesy plastic instruments. Another used Kinect to add real-time lightsaber effects to his wooden sword, the dream of every Star Wars nerd. And the Kinect's infrared sensors make it a true three-dimensional camera, able to take pictures of an object or person at multiple angles. Geeks have used this ability to create 3D computer models of their rooms, furniture and everything.

But what about more practical applications? With a simple Kinect hack and a little bit of video editing magic, one geek used Kinect to erase himself from video footage in real-time... like he had become entirely invisible! Another used it as a sensory eye for his flying robot, giving it 3D vision far greater than that of any normal human. Could this seemingly innocuous video gaming device usher in a whole new era of robotics?

Microsoft has realized that the Kinect has endless potential, beyond anything they envisioned when they first created it. That's why there are rumors that they'll be adding official Kinect support to PCs and Macs in the upcoming months. And the geek community will be ready, with a whole new stable of impressive hacks that will change the way we interact with computers forever.

Robbie's a big fan of all things tech. Whether you're looking for desktop pcs or netbooks or you want to find the latest xbox 360 accessories; Robbie's the man!

Minecraft Mobs and Creatures

The passive mobs include pigs, sheep, cows, chickens, and squids. These creatures roam all around the Minecraft world. They also give you resources that you can use for different things. You will need to

hunt for pigs, especially if you are low on health.

-Pigs- Pigs will give you meat that you can cook and then consume to regain health.

-Sheep- Sheep give you wool; you can decorate your home with this.

-Cows- Before you do a dungeon you will need to make armor, you will need to hunt and kill cows to get leather.

-Chickens- Chickens are known for giving you eggs and feathers. Feathers can be used to make arrows; eggs are used in the recipe to make a cake (which also gives you health).

-Squid- The last passive creature is the squid. The squid will drop ink sacs when you kill it. From these ink sacs you can make dye, which then can be used to dye wool.

There are four main aggressive mobs that you will see while playing Minecraft. Some of them can only spawn in dark places, while others can come out in the day. You will need to take precaution if you run into one of these.

-Creepers- Creepers are the most annoying of these mobs. They can be out during the day or night. They are sneaky; they are silent until they get close to you then let out a hissing sound and explode in about 2 seconds.

-Skeletons- Skeletons only spawn in dark areas like caves or on surface at night. They are fairly quick enemies; they also shoot arrows at players. Skeletons as well as zombies will catch on fire if they get caught in the sunlight.

-Zombies- Zombies are a straightforward enemy. When you get close to them they will make an ominous moaning sound.

-Spiders- The last creature is spiders. Spiders have red glowing eyes that look creepy when you run up on them in a cave. They also make a loud hissing sound when you are close to them. Spiders only attack at night; they will only attack in the day if you attack them.

Hopefully now you will be able to protect yourself from the aggressive mobs in Minecraft. As well as collecting materials from the passive creatures. Which will make your gameplay easier.

Updates will bring more and more mobs and creatures so be prepared for more!

minecraft crafting guide

At this juncture is a inventory of all acknowledged Minecraft crafting recipe taking part in the most recent version of Minecraft.

On behalf of individuals of you who don’t know what did you say? Minecraft crafting is, it is the way taking part in which tools, weapons and other items are made from untrained capital such at the same time as wooden planks, iron, coal and kernel. The earlier versions of Minecraft prepare not include the talent to create items so get paid definitely you are singing individual of these versions of the game: Indev, Infdev before Alpha.

To create an point, capital essential come to pass placed into a crafting grid from your record taking part in a given pattern to create a scrupulous point. Roughly patterns are minor and can come to pass crafted on the 2×2 grid found taking part in your record screen, but superior ones require a 3×3 grid. To access this superior grid, fundamental build a crafting plan which can subsequently come to pass used by in shape clicking on it one time it has been placed on the ground. It is critical to message with the purpose of it does not make a difference somewhere on the grid the capital are placed, at the same time as extended at the same time as the correct pattern on behalf of the point is used. This process with the purpose of all 2×2 recipe can too come to pass implemented using a crafting table’s 3×3 grid. The crafting pattern can too come to pass flipped horizontally. On behalf of paradigm, you can create a fishing pole with the run on the absent margin of the 3×3 grid.

The pickaxe is bent by insertion two sticks down the hub of the 3×3 grid (see above). Visualize this at the same time as two minor sticks being set collected to form a extended supervise on behalf of the pickaxe. Three of the same resource (wooden planks, kernel, iron, gold before diamond) are subsequently placed across the top three boxes taking part in the grid. Picture this at the same time as being the blade of the pickaxe with the purpose of is attached to the top of the supervise. You’re prepared! Many of the items you create taking part in Minecraft can come to pass visualized this way, so try not to finished think things.

Minecraft Crafting – point Durability

Armor, roughly tools and swords can all come to pass crafted using several not the same capital. These items spirit ultimate longer and control faster/better if they are made from a harder resource. A minor impairment ban beneath each one point displays how much longer a tool spirit ultimate previously it breaks and disappears.

The universal equation on behalf of calculating the come to of uses a tool before sword is well brought-up on behalf of is 2(n+5) + 1. The “n” taking part in the equation is the strength of the material. A take advantage of is counted if you completely break apart a mass before collide with an enemy. If you end while you are still working on the mass and prepare not rub flouting it, a take advantage of is not counted anti your tool. If you take advantage of a tool (or sword) on behalf of a task other than what did you say? It is doomed on behalf of such at the same time as using a scoop to break apart shock, this counts at the same time as two uses.

The amount of impairment a quantity of armor protects you from depends on the percentage of enduring uses it has and its come to of bottom armor points. The come to of bottom armor points with the purpose of each one quantity of armor provides can come to pass found taking part in the Armor Recipes section. The defending talent of the armor spirit decrease at the same time as the come to of period it has been used increases.

Paradigm: As soon as 30 uses (of least damage), a leather helmet spirit comprise 38.8% of its uses enduring (10 not in of 49) and therefore 39% of a helmet’s upper limit impairment protection. A diamond helmet would comprise 92.2% of its uses absent (355 not in of 385) as soon as 30 uses and would still comprise 92.2% of a helmet’s upper limit impairment protection enduring.

Sudden

Each one mass you break using the proper tool is 1 take advantage of. (Use axes on behalf of covert, shovels on behalf of dirt and pickaxes on behalf of stone-type blocks).

Each one mass you break using the injustice tool is 2 uses.

Each one occasion you collide with a mob with your sword is 1 take advantage of.

Each one occasion you collide with a mob with a tool counts at the same time as 2 uses.

Each one occasion a quantity of armor is used to shield anti a few amount of impairment is 1 take advantage of. If you are wearing multiple pieces of armor, 1 take advantage of spirit come to pass counted anti each one quantity you are wearing. Wearing multiple pieces spirit absorb additional impairment.

Each one quantity of armor provides a not the same amount of protection before “armor points”. The stronger the type of armor (leather, gold, iron, and the rest.), the better it is on retaining it’s talent to absorb impairment at the same time as the come to of uses increases.

At what time the impairment ban under a tool icon is completely vacant, it spirit break as soon as the after that take advantage of.

Tool and Sword Durability

This is how many blocks a tool can break before hits a sword can deal at what time they are used as it should be.

Covert – 33 uses (n = 0)

Gold – 33 uses (n = 0)

Kernel – 65 uses (n = 1)

Iron – 129 uses (n = 2)

Diamond – 1025 uses (n = 5)
