Minecraft? More Like Minecrack!

I'm going to start off saying, " This game kicks ass!" Just trying to get away to write this article was tough without alt-tabbing to slay a horde of monstrous creatures,build a mighty fortress able to withstand the forces of hell itself, or building some giant 8-bit Mario on top of the ocean in front of the castle, like the Colossus of Rhodes Guarding the harbor in 280 BC. History of GDC

Originally, GDC started out as the Computer Game Developers Conference (CGDC) which organized its first conference, under the leadership of Chris Crawford, in 1988 at San Jose, California. Undeterred, Crawford launched CGDC's second conference later that same year at Holiday Inn, Milpitas. This time the conference was able to attract 150 developers to attend.

By 1991-1995, CDGC has been growing steadily popular among developers and has shown increased attendance from 538 to 2387. Ernest W. You build anything you want, monsters block you, and you gather materials from things you have broken down in order to build up basic structure. There are objects such as swords, minecarts, chests, buckets, plants where you can plant your own garden, it's up to the player what to do.

Minecraft Public Works: Underwater Glass Tunnel

There are plenty of things to do within the vast, expansive (and technically infinite) world of Minecraft. While some may have set out and became veritable grand architects in their world, I wager there are plenty who ended up building their castle and spire out of their quarried stone, stared at it for a while, maybe fired a few arrows down onto the rampaging skeletons and zombies below, and got bored with it.

If you're lacking ingenuity, you need not be ashamed. To follow will be a handy guide to help you through your next Minecraft project.

"What's my next Minecraft project?" you're surely asking. Well, it's not just a simple game of virtual Legos. You'll be engineering this bad boy, and I'm gonna guide you through how to do it.

The first thing you need is to find a decent body of water. If you built your humble abode somewhere near a lake or pond or ocean, and a number of anthropological studies would suggest that you're quite likely to have done so, then you're already well on your way. If you haven't, find one. It needs to be deep and wide, and preferably with some sort of large mountain or hill beside it, so you can ascend it and gaze upon your beautiful creation.

The next thing you need to do is find some sand to quarry, because you'll be needing it. Lots of it. Once you find the sand, you need to set up an array of smelters to accept the sand, because you'll be making more glass than you'd ever thought you'd need. This glass will be the primary material when you construct your underwater tunnel.

At first consideration, you may be thinking that building an underwater tunnel should be relatively straightforward. However in Minecraft, there's no way (yet) to remove a large body of water quickly and efficiently. You can only push it out of the way with other materials. As such, you will need a lot of dirt to be your water-pusher. You can use something else if you like, but dirt is the easiest and fastest thing to remove with a decent shovel. Consistency of material will also be helpful once you're ready for the removal process.

Use your dirt like a sculptor. Imagine the dirt is the open cavity of the tunnel, and the glass is what will be encompassing it. For my own tunnel, I chose to make it a 3x3 shaft with a single layer of glass all around it that connected my castle's basement to the other side of the lake. Later I attached a fork that made for a longer, more scenic stroll, and it filled out the remainder of my lake, so it looked far more impressive when I gazed upon my creation from above the surface. And yes, you can see the tunnel from above. Even better, you can put torches inside of it, which illuminates your lake in a pleasing, even impressive way.

Collecting the dirt and sand is not intended to be a one-time job. You'll need a lot, hundreds and hundreds of units. I recommend quarrying dirt and smelting the sand during the night and constructing the tunnel by day to maximize your output.

When you get down to building, you really don't need to be concerned about much of anything with your method except that you get ALL of the water out of your way, which means now allowing any gaps. Gaps can lead to pockets of water appearing inside of your tunnel, which can lead to flooding, and disaster. Once you have the dirt interior, coat your tunnel with a layer of glass.

When you're through with that, which will take quite some time, tunnel to where the end of your glass masterpiece hits the earth, and get to digging. When finished, you should have an incredible transparent tunnel going straight through a lake. Amaze your friends, impress your significant other, and remind yourself that you choose to do this for leisure, and it's nobody's business how you spend your time.

Minecraft Survival Guide

Minecraft has received huge amounts of praise recently for being one of the most creative games conceived for many years. Each game is randomly built of hundreds of thousands of cubes. There are many different types of cube. Ranging from solid rock, or dirt and even lava blocks.

You can spend all your time building huge castles, or all your time mining for coal. The choice really is yours to do whatever you feel.

I'll cover here the basics of surviving your first night. The first is always the worst.

At night a whole variety of monsters and bad guys spawn and try and end the life of your player. Skeletons fire arrows from what seems like miles away, spiders jump out of nowhere and chase you for miles and zombies hide behind corners waiting to jump on the player when he least expects it.

Day Time.

During your first Minecraft day you should collect enough raw material to see you through the night. Start with wooden logs to make planks and sticks, then mine some coal and rock for picks and torches.

Crafting a stone sword will help in case any stray monsters penetrate your defences unexpectedly.

Build a small dwelling where you can hide out if you find yourself surrounded by monsters.

Night Time.

By now you should have enough materials to last the next 10 minutes of game time. People often use the night to mine for more stone resources, or go exploring in cave and mine systems.

Venturing out into the wild on the first few nights before you really have a feel for the game often leads to unexpected and annoying deaths. I found on my first night stepping out allowed a creeper to jump off my roof and explode on my head. Killing me instantly and destroying my home.

I spent the rest of the night just running around as every time I stopped an arrow whizzed past my head.

The second night is always easier, and the more you play the most resources you'll have to combat all the monsters.

Remember to have fun. You'll be addicted before you know it.

Minecraft - An Introduction

Minecraft is a game based around a seemingly simple goal. Players must navigate an infinitely expanding world of cubes and collect blocks of various materials. With these materials, players can use the Minecraft crafting system to build nearly anything they can imagine. From simple huts and buildings to complex logic gates and switch systems used to power elaborate cities, in Minecraft anything is possible.

With a few basic materials, the crafting system allows players to craft everything needed to create an entire world. In the beginning, the player must use their hands to harvest wood, dirt, and stone to craft the basic essentials. These essential items include tools, such as pickaxes and shovels, construction components such as doors, glass and bricks, and equipment such as swords, bows and pieces of armor. By placing materials in a certain order on a 3-by-3 grid, players can craft any item they may need to build and defend their always evolving houses and fortresses. As a quick example, placing two pieces of wood in the bottom-middle of the grid and lining the top of the grid with stone, a player can craft a stone pickaxe.

This basic tool will allow them to harvest minerals at a faster pace than if they were to use their hands. However, most items created within the game will slowly lose their durability as they are being used and will eventually break. This requires that players ensure they have an ample supply of materials to keep progressing in the game. When travelling deeper into the world, players may run across stronger minerals and ores such as iron, diamond or obsidian. Using the same system, players may then craft tools which are more durable or deal more damage to hostile creatures. Player can also construct elaborate switch arrangements and transport systems to secure locations and make navigating their world quick and easy.

In the current release of Minecraft, there are multiple game play modes to fit a given players style. For those that wish to build and construct with no need to gather materials or worry about other players and monsters roaming the world, there is the Classic mode. If a player wishes to enjoy the exploration and harvesting aspects of the game without the online aspects, there is Single Player mode. The Single Player mode also allows the player to decide if they wish to have hostile creatures spawn within the world. For those looking to have it all, there is Multiplayer mode, allowing players to connect to hosted servers where any combination of the above rules may apply. Regardless of which mode of play a player chooses, the core concepts of Minecraft such as mining, crafting and building still apply.

Minecraft creatures are the bad guys that demolish the structures:

These Minecraft creatures are actually the bad guys that haunt the game and increase the difficulty with each passing level. There are a number of different Minecraft creatures that create problems for the players, yet make the game more interesting and challenging at the same time.

As the level moves on to get tougher and more challenging, the Minecraft creatures too tend to have greater power, and stronger abilities to destruct the architects built by the players.

Therefore, the players are supposed to look after their structures and make sure that they are safe from the evil Minecraft creatures who jump in the game to demolish the structures at absolutely any time, or particularly when it is least expected by the players. These creatures also vary in how difficult they are to control and get rid of. Cow being the easiest Minecraft creature to tackle while Pigman being the most difficult enemy. All these seventeen creatures include; cow, pig, sheep, chicken, squid, wolf, skeleton, spider jockey, spider, creeper, zombie, slime, zombie pigman, giant, man, and pigman. The listed creatures range in the difficulty level respectively.

The passive creatures do not attack the players:

Although it is hard to deal with the Minecraft Creatures, not all of them are the bad guys, or perhaps they could be used in the advantage of the player. Wolf is the one allied creature. It could be tamed by the player and used to guard the structures. Creatures like; pig, cow, sheep, chicken, and squid are the passive creatures. They do not attack the players, but they are a huge threat on the survival of the structures. Neutral creatures like; zombie pigman and wild wolf are likely to attack the players if provoked, and are a huge warning to the structures as well. Getting a good minecraft skins could as well help you fight all the bad minecraft creatures.

Therefore it is important that they are wisely tackled by the players. Aggressive creatures like; zombie, skeleton, spider, spider jockey, creeper, slime, and ghast are the most difficult to defeat. They are the biggest threats to the players; they can attack at any time and destroy the whole architect built by the players and even attack the players when in range, even if they are not provoked. The Minecraft creatures are one of the most important features of the game that makes it more interactive, interesting and full of challenges.

I would say that this is really a great innovation from Sony, and with impressive features, I can already see that there are a lot of new concepts that game developers can create using the camera peripheral of Sony Playstation Move.

7 Things Minecraft Taught Me About Internet Marketing

There's a lot of them and you always have to keep an eye out for them, but the good news is that none of them have very sophisticated AI. They see you, they charge, you kill them, they die. In fact, everybody's using the same tools you are - it's just tough to make it because there's a lot of hands competing for each dollar.

4. Dig deep!

In Minecraft, diamonds, gold, coal, lapus lazuli, and iron are all waiting for you to dig them up and convert them into handy resources and tools. and so with Internet Marketing, there's a lot of money out there that's spread very thin. Take a miner's view of it. Grind for 100 yards and make ten dollars in ad impressions. Well, keep grinding!

5. Impress yourself first.

If you play Minecraft in single-player, at times it feels like a lonely game while you build your castles and railroads. But it is still fun, as long as you're building something beautiful and impressive. If all you end up with is an ugly mud hut, then it feels twice as lonely. In the web business game, your product and your site should wow you, first. Your own criticism comes free, after all, so if you feel like you believe in your own business, your customers will too.

6. Tinker and invent.

Minecraft rewards the tinkerer. Go on YouTube and there's thousands of crafters showing off their work. Using the "redstone" element which acts like electrical wiring, together with other mechanical devices in the game, they've built working calculators, roller coasters, water slides, player pianos, harvesting systems, and even a full-scale model of the Starship Enterprise! Likewise, in Internet Marketing, there's tons of geeky toys to play with and connect together into profitable systems in new ways. What gadget written in PHP, Javascript, or Flash could you have on your site right now to draw visitors? Could the pieces to put together the next Twitter be right in front of you?

7. Gain fame by showing off your work.

Of course, those YouTube videos I mentioned, in themselves, are sometimes clever Internet Marketing. As with the Second Life game, businesses are starting to use Minecraft to market themselves. Minecraft Is Ruining My Life

Plenty of things can change someone's life; divorce, sickness, or even death. However, my life has been changing due to something a little differently lately-Minecraft. This game is addictive. If you haven't played it before, you don't even know. Don't try it out. In fact, don't even think about it. Run man, RUN!

Anyway, the Classic version of the game is pretty entertaining on its own. It's basically just a huge sandbox game where you build with different blocks. There isn't much to it, but I found myself playing it for hours on end. It even started interfering with other parts of my life, because I couldn't get it out of my head. It was like a bad nicotine addiction, but turned all the way up to 11. It only got worse when I started playing the Alpha.

Unlike Classic, you have to actually do something to get your building materials. When I first started, I'm pretty sure some sort of divine entity tried to show me some mercy; I couldn't, for the life of me, figure out how to break blocks. I kept clicking on them, but they weren't breaking like they did in Classic. "This is dumb," I thought and abandoned the game. I should have stayed away.

One of my friends told me how to mine blocks. It was the beginning of the end, I guess. Soon, I had stone tools, stacks of wood, and a pretty glass window. I was king of my world, and my shelter was totally safe from monsters.

Oh god, the monsters.

There are quite a few monsters, or "mobs" as they're officially called, in the game. Some of them are classics, such as the zombies and skeletons that creep around everywhere. Speaking of creeping, there are more dangerous mobs like creepers. Unfortunately, creepers aren't just scary old men that follow children; in Minecraft, they're big, walking green things that explode in your face when you get near them.

These things are scary. You learn to fear them when you're in caves or whenever you get trapped outside in the dark. You start to be incredibly alert when going anywhere, even in the day, and the sounds start to get to you. You hear sounds everywhere-moans, groans, twangs, slurps, all that fun stuff. It's just terrifying.

I was recently mining in a cave I'd recently lit up. Despite being mostly lit with torches, I was still really scared that there were monsters lurking somewhere. I knew they were there. I could feel them. It'd been a long day of collecting iron and coal from this particular shaft, so I went back up to the entrance to my cave. To my horror, it was night outside. Fearful for my life, I quickly erected a small dirt hut to protect me. It was ridiculous and extreme, but it made me feel secure and safe. I couldn't see those hungry, lusty eyes in the darkness anymore, and that was cool with me.

I spend hours a day playing Minecraft. Sometimes I'm adding to my shelter, other times I'm gathering resources. The world I'm in right now is almost completely self-sustaining, so I have to occupy my time there doing other time consuming things. One of my first big projects was hollowing out 1492 blocks to make a huge underwater room to grow trees in. It took a ton of time, and I'm not even sure why I bothered doing it. Despite that, it's still my crowning achievement. I've since added on to it, creating sub-farms for other crops like wheat and cacti. I probably have a good three hours into that room alone.

All of that is pretty sane so far. It's only a game, right?

It's been two or three months since I started playing Minecraft, and lately I've started seeing and hearing things. Horrible things. At night, I hear moaning; perhaps other Minecrafters in similar positions calling for help? I see skeletons bouncing around outside my window, and around every corner I glimpse the green, pixelated skin of a creeper. I expect to hear the Minecraftian door sound whenever I push on a door, and I sometimes forget that there are shapes other than blocks.

My mind is slowly being eaten away by this treacherously addictive game, and I can't do a thing about it. Maybe I'm an addict. Dictionary.com defines an addiction as "the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma."

I think Minecraft pretty much fits the bill here. It's super habit-forming, and it's probably causing severe trauma to my mind. I can see this wonderful, horrible game being as hotly debated as marijuana is right now. It's just that good/bad.

Playing on Minecraft Servers Fixes Dull Game

Minecraft has been known to be addicting. Minecraft rewards block dexterity in the best ways. When playing Minecraft you have a feeling of living through an inhospitable land. You wind up not just surviving, but doing well and casting works of art. Minecraft possesses an uncommon type of built-in level progression that makes you feel accomplished. The more you mine the more resources you own and the better looking your creations.

The game's in beta and still is not flawless yet. As of right now, there's really no which can really kill the fun. And because there aren't Non-Player Characters it can get very lame and make it clear how barren the Minecraft land is. Your sense of epicness in this grand and never-ending land dies when all the landscape starts to look repetitive.

Gaming within Minecraft servers do, however, cure most of these ailments. Goals are created by other Minecraft online players. Online gamers are a great source of endless content. You'll now have people to show off your sculptures to, and the surrounding territory would be much more diverse because it's 100% player created. You can come across unique towns, sculptures, and mazes in your expeditions.

But there are enormous setbacks with locating an online server that's good for you. You maybe want PVP enabled, you maybe want a more creative world to game in. You maybe need a RP server, you maybe want to live in an anarchy with no laws or you might want civilization. If the rules aren't tough enough you can wind up with unneeded griefers, murderers, and thieves. If the laws are too tough you might feel a loss of control, the inability to craft where you want, and it's only fun for those with power.

There are many server websites online however the majority are not good enough, and don't meet my needs. There's a lot of voter based spamming, which turns the entire site into a popularity contest with no indication of if a server's a good fit for YOU. I was looking in a server site recently which used the exact same description for each of their listings so they can reach #1 on search engines quickly by having many low content posts. A lot more of these directories are also biased, giving praise to only those websites who are willing and able to pay and no recognition to all else.

Pick your server with care, make sure it meets all of your wants, or else you'll be forever doomed to server-hop, over time getting frustrated and forgetting about the awesome opportunities that multiplayer can bring you.

Minecraft: The Great Hole Dig Of 2011

I am an addict. Phew! There, I said it. I, like many other closet geeks, am addicted to Minecraft. Damn you notch!! I first heard about Minecraft on good game where bajo told me of the joys of punching sheep, I was a little confused as to what this new game, that looked like an old game, was actually all about. Husband heard about it too, and next thing you know, we purchased it for something like 9 gbp or whatever.

Didn't exactly break the bank so what the hey!

Minecraft is the hardest game to explain, because it doesn't really have a point. You just do what you want to do with it.

Some people play it as a hunting game, waiting for the night to fall an the monsters to come out.

Others build massive structures, quite impressive really, one guy built the starship enterprise for crying out loud!

And me? Well, I dug a hole.

At first I was all like "yay, breaking bricks and building homes, digging for iron, woot!" Then I was like "cool, I found a massive cavern while digging a tunnel and it had zombies in it that killed me!" But also I was like "'now that i've re-spawned and killed all the zombies and shit and put up some torches and stuff, there's heaps of cool shizzit in here!" And then I was all "i'm so lost in this labyrinth of caverns! I wish it was one big cavern!"

So that was how I began the great hole dig of 2011!

I downloaded (by i, I mean husband, he's clever like that) a map program so I can actually see what i'm digging into, and I began to look down through the layers of my world.

I discovered that all my caverns, were actually connected, and that in all the walls and floors separating the 'rooms', was a whole heap of cool shit!

So using the map, I marked out the corners of what would be the great hole, making sure to not miss any ore deposits below the surface.

I then connected the corners with a walkway.

Filled in all the water, then dug out the dirt.

Encased the water spawn point in an orb of dirt.

Then began to systematically dig my way down.

And down.

And down!

The floor of the great hole covers 48 x 98 cubes.

That's 4,704 cubes. Assuming a layer consists of entirely gravel bricks, and that a pick-axe destroys approx 130 gravel bricks before breaking, that's approx 36 pick-axes per layer. I'm about 23 layers below sea level. To get there I would have needed to break approx 108,192 bricks. That's 832 pick-axes. I have spent a significant number of hours digging this hole.

And I'm only about half way......

But Minecraft isn't just about digging and building (or mining and crafting if you will), there's other thing in this game.

Such as soft and fluffy animals!

Zombies moan of course, so they're easy enough to hear coming. Not hard to kill, just a few jabs with your sword and they're dead. Also, along with skeletons, zombies catch on fire when the sun comes up!

If you die at night, which is when most Minecraft deaths occur as a result of monster attacks, then you will re-spawn far away, with no belongings, no armour, no weapons, and have to find your way back without dying again! I don't know what it is about Minecraft, but I love it. I'm completely addicted and don't think that'll change anytime soon. It's one of those things where you try to explain it to people and they just look at you like you're eating your own earwax or something. You'll just have to try it out for yourselves.

But it's not just classic video games that are receiving the royal treatment. One guy used Kinect to create an actual working air guitar! Just imagine a future version of Rock Band without the cheesy plastic instruments. Another used Kinect to add real-time lightsaber effects to his wooden sword, the dream of every Star Wars nerd. And the Kinect's infrared sensors make it a true three-dimensional camera, able to take pictures of an object or person at multiple angles. Geeks have used this ability to create 3D computer models of their rooms, furniture and everything.

But what about more practical applications?
